Back in 1970 Alan Kay proposed a device called Dynabook. The concept led to personal computer, the Alto, which was a precursor to the first Apple Macintosh. The R&D community had this Utopian view of bringing computer power to people. One researcher called it power steering for the mind. But once commercial interests took over it became power steering to retail sales.
